French poetry indisputably occupies a vital position on the map of world poetry. Insofar as Europe has a common poetic tradition, that tradition originates primarily in the spiritual genealogy of Greek lyric poetry and the heroic epics. Setting this aside, however, French poetry represents one essential locus of Western poetry. French poetry amazes and moves us. It is not only continually renewing itself in terms of its thinking and content, but this renewal is usually intimately connected to specific moments in the history of the French people, and this connection represents a genuine reflection of history and the contemporaneous realities. Throughout, most important were the poets of the time, who chose different ways of exploring the possibilities of form and language to the greatest multidimensional depths. From the work of Baudelaire to Mallarmé, Rimbaud, Comte de Lautréamont, Valéry, Saint-Jean Perse, René Char, Henri Michaux, Bonnefoy, Eugène Guillevic and many others, French poetry has always faced toward the future while offering an unbroken written record of its own history, which is also the history of contemporary world poetry, particularly that of the twentieth century and beyond. Unforgettable French poetic voices have risen in wave after wave initiated by Surrealism, a Parisian cultural movement that not only influenced the many different exploratory paths that French poetry took, but also influenced the fine arts, film, and other artistic arenas as an ideological undertaking. If there can be said to have been transnational art movements that profoundly influenced the world during the twentieth century, there is no doubt that Surrealism would count as one. With “high intensity” adventures in language and form, and with avant-garde experimentation undertaken from every possible orientation, like a mighty river with many tributaries, French poetry has relied on the great creations of its gifted poetry stars to bring us into the psyche of the French people. A radiant palace constructed from words and images, it is crisscrossed elaborately with many secret paths. Of course, it is the poets’ summons that allows lovers of poetry across the globe to enter.
This perhaps accounts for the magnetism of French poetry, and even in the present day, it retains its exuberance and vitality. Although poetry today is experiencing pressures from consumerism and technology, in general modern French poetry has slowly entered a period of stability. Nevertheless, there are still many experimental and highly creative poets, who have perhaps been subject to the deformations of capitalism and the media, and yet who persist in living intensely poetic lives. Jean-Pierre Siméon is an premier example of one such writer.
Jean-Pierre Siméon serves as a link between the past and the future within contemporary French poetry. He experienced the heyday of modern French poetry along with its gradual decline, and his work is clearly influenced by many different aspects of that tradition: its implicitness and tensions, wildness and contemplation, thoughtfulness and expansiveness, openness and existential nature all manifest themselves in different ways in his work. Siméon seems to cool overheated language in his writing. He is a lyrical writer by temperament, but without exception the lyricism in his poetry is drawn from great depths. Most valuable is that even though his poetry must bear the weight of diverse content and contemplations, his language maintains an impressive quality of purity, cleanness, and transparency. In the rhythms and implications revealed in his Letter to a Beloved Woman on the Subject of Death, one can sense not only his instinctual curiosity, but also his sensitivity to life and love. Of course, on the most intrinsic level, Siméon never forgets the consideration of death; the delights of life are fleeting and another theme of his poetry has always been the oppositions and transformations between life and death. As a poet of action, his poetry is not a direct response to social issues; rather, in embracing the complexities of life in society, he pursues fairness and justice, and displays a spontaneous affection and sympathy for the less fortunate. A unity between the poet and poetry is still at times very important, and Siméon trusts in the power of forgiveness and understanding within the goodness in human nature. He believes poetry is a kind of “childlike innocent thinking,” and that it originates from the direct experiences an individual has in the course of a lifetime. Whether in terms of spiritual creation or ordinary life, as a defender of humanitarianism and goodness, he is always on the alert against the evil in human nature and social injustice. As a true lyric poet, Siméon’s oeuvre offers us one magnificent aspect of contemporary French poetry, showing us truth’s glimmer, love’s horizons, the warmest recitation of human nature, and the deliverance that poetry offers to this world. For all of these contributions, we are delighted to present the “1573 International Poetry Award” to one of the most outstanding representatives of contemporary French poetry, Jean-Pierre Siméon.
